A trusted name in pianos for over a century

Shaun King is the fourth generation of piano tuners from King and Son Pianos, founded in Gloucester in 1886. He learned the trade the traditional way, through an apprenticeship with his grandfather and father after leaving school in 1977, and has been looking after pianos across the county ever since.

Nearly 50 years on, Shaun still brings the same care and craftsmanship to every visit. That applies whether it’s a family upright that needs its twice-yearly tuning or a treasured instrument that deserves a full reconditioning.

Services

How I can help?
Piano tuning

Changes in temperature and humidity affect every piano, especially with modern central heating. Regular tuning, ideally twice a year, keeps your piano sounding its best and helps prevent bigger problems later.

Repairs and reconditioning

Sticking keys, buzzing notes and worn hammers can all be put right. During a regular service, Shaun will spot problems early and give you honest advice on whether a repair or a full reconditioning is worthwhile for your piano.

Buying and selling pianos

Looking for a piano, or have one you no longer need? Shaun buys and sells pianos and can help you find the right instrument for your home, your budget and your playing.

Impartial buying advice

Buying a piano is a big decision, and a bad one can be expensive. With nearly 50 years in the trade, Shaun offers unbiased advice so you know exactly what you’re getting before you buy, wherever you’re buying from.

Piano accessories

Piano stools, humidifiers, heaters, metronomes, polishes, castor cups and more. Ask Shaun at your next visit, or get in touch for a price list.

Testimonials

What customers say

“”Joyce Manley & Cheryl Hossle nee Manley B.A. (Performing Arts) University of Wales.
It is with the greatest of pleasure that I write a testimonial to the services, as piano tuner, of Mr Shaun King, over a period extending for more than four decades.
He has given satisfaction in tuning a number of our instruments from a Bentley, Schimmel, to a grand piano.
He has always shown courtesy, efficiency and reliability.

Jenny Witt
My fairly ancient Marshall & Rose piano has been tuned regularly for over 30 years, firstly by Shaun King’s father and more recently by Shaun himself. The instrument always sounds marvellous following a tuning and worthy of a better pianist than me!
I would certainly recommend Shaun King’s piano services to others and hope that he will be able to tune my piano for as long as I require it

Mrs Conaty
Mr King has been tuning our piano for over thirty years and we have always been very pleased with his work. As well as being reliable and efficient, he is friendly and courteous. He supplied us with the piano we have at present, which continues to serve our family very well.
I am delighted to recommend him.

Liz Teague
Shaun has been our piano tuner for the last 35 years or more. This is probably enough to recommend him to anyone, as nobody in their right senses has the same tuner for a quarter of a century if he does not give satisfaction!
However, in addition to this longstanding loyalty to him, I would like to add that he is helpful, timely, friendly and accommodating.
He recently reconditioned our piano for us and we were delighted both with the end result, and also his careful explanation of all the work he needed to do and his follow up service to make sure the touch felt right after all the work.
Thank you very much, Shaun, for quality service.

Simon Probert – Piano Lessons
Brian King and his son Shaun have looked after my instruments for over a decade. Working all over Gloucestershire they tune, repair and recondition every make of piano, and offer an excellent advisory service if you are thinking of buying an instrument.

FAQ
Common questions

How often should my piano be tuned? Twice a year for most home pianos. More often if it’s played heavily or sits in a room with big swings in temperature.

My piano hasn’t been tuned in years. Can it still be saved? Usually, yes. A neglected piano may need a pitch raise before a fine tuning, and Shaun will tell you honestly what’s involved.

How long does a tuning take? Around 60 minutes to a couple of hours for a typical piano.
